Detecting Duplicates

1. Switch to Dupe mode.

2. Drop one or more sequence XML, FCPXML, or EDL files onto the drop zone. You can add files from multiple episodes.

3. In Selected Files, tick the files you want included in the comparison.

4. Optional: rename any unclear episode labels from the sidebar context menu with Rename Display Name…. This does not rename the source file.

5. Optional: if the short episode code shown in table pips and PDF exports is wrong - for example, two episodes auto-derived the same code - right-click the sequence and choose Edit Episode Code…. This is independent of the Display Name. See Episode Codes for details.

6. Optional: set a Target Episode - click the target icon beside a file, or right-click the sequence and choose Set as Target Episode. Use this when you want to check one episode against the rest. The active target shows as a chip in the results bar.

7. Review Cross-Episode, Matrix, Within, or Unique in the sidebar.

8. Results appear grouped by source clip. Expand a row to see every visible use.

Match types and tolerances

Exact, Partial, and Proximity are described in the Dupe overview. Their behaviour is controlled by Settings → Dupe:

• Proximity range - how far apart two same-card clips can sit in the timeline and still match (default 5, range 1–50).
• Fuzzy name matching - off by default; turn on for similarity-based name comparison with a configurable threshold (0.70–1.00).
• Timecode tolerance and duration tolerance - used by fuzzy matching when comparing source ranges.

Display Names

Dupe labels episodes from the open sequence’s Display Name. If a filename does not clearly identify the episode, right-click the sequence in the sidebar and choose Rename Display Name….

Display Names are app-only labels used in the Dupe table, Matrix, Target Episode picker, and exports. They are persisted with the open set, and the original file on disk is left untouched.

Reading the results

The results table has two levels:

• Parent row - the source reel, media type, best visible match kind, and source timecode range. The media-type column shows V (video), A (audio), STILL (imported image), or GEN (a generated graphic).
• Expanded uses - each individual appearance, with episode, sequence/timeline, sequence timecode, source range, match kind, and source gap/overlap/distance.

Rows are expanded by default in duplicate views because the useful editorial detail is usually in the child uses. Use the expand/collapse button in the result bar to compact or reopen all visible rows.

Acting on a result

Right-click any result row for the quick actions:

• Copy Reel and Copy TC - the source reel name or shared source timecode range, ready to paste into a clearance email or QC note.
• Gather all uses in this group - switches to Gather with the group’s media queued, for pulling everything involved in a flagged repeat.
• Show this use in the cut - switches to Sheet and highlights the use at its place in the timeline. When a group has several uses, a submenu lists each one by episode and timecode.

Filtering

The result bar has two independent filter groups:

• Audio / Video / Stills / Generated - include or hide rows by media type.
• Exact / Partial / Prox - include or hide match kinds.

Every row is exactly one media type, so the counts beside each tick box always add up to the total:

• Audio - sound: dialogue, music, effects, voiceover.
• Video - picture from a real source file, such as camera rushes, stock footage, or a delivered shot.
• Stills - imported image files (PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PSD, and similar). Shown by default, because a stock photo reused across cuts is genuine reuse worth seeing.
• Generated - titles, name straps, lower thirds, shapes and other graphics built inside the edit rather than imported. Hidden by default, because reusing a house graphic or an underline is usually deliberate rather than an accident. Toggle it on when you want to review them.

Where the edit list carries a title’s text, each title is named after it - for example Graphic - Flying Fox - so different name straps stay separate instead of collapsing into one anonymous “Graphic” row. Some formats don’t export the title’s words (Avid Title Tool titles, and Resolve Fusion titles), so those gather under a single Graphic - Title row. This works for Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve, and Avid EDL exports.

Filters apply to the expanded uses first. If a row contains Exact, Partial, and Proximity matches, hiding Exact will keep the row visible if Partial or Proximity uses remain, and the parent Best label will update to the highest remaining match kind.

Ignoring utility media

Some productions carry intentional utility media across every cut, such as aspect-ratio bars, slates, or calibration frames. If those rows swamp the duplicate report, right-click one of the rows and choose Ignore this source in Dupe.

Ignored sources are removed before Dupe detection runs, so every matching instance is excluded from Cross-Episode rows, Matrix counts, Unique counts, and Dupe exports. Manage or clear the list in Settings → Dupe → Ignored sources.

Target Episode

Set a Target Episode when you are cutting one episode and only care whether that episode’s shots appear elsewhere.

If EP101 is the target, Cross-Episode shows:

• EP101 shots also used in EP102, EP103, or EP104.
• Parent rows from EP101’s perspective, sorted and exported with EP101’s sequence timecode.
• No rows for duplicates that only happen between other episodes.

You can set the target from the target icon beside a file or by right-clicking the sequence in the sidebar - Set as Target Episode sits at the top of the menu in Dupe mode, including on multi-track cut groups. The active target shows as a chip in the results bar: click the chip’s ✕, the target icon, or Clear Target Episode to return to a whole-set duplicate view.

Exports

Use the export menu for:

Export	What it contains
XLSX Report	Full DejaView-style workbook for deeper spreadsheet review.
PDF View	The current visible/sorted/filtered Dupe table, using the same parent + child layout as the app.
PDF Master	A grouped review packet. Each selected episode is treated as the Target Episode in turn, sorted by target episode then sequence timecode.

Use PDF View when you have manually curated the app table. Use PDF Master when you want a single episode-by-episode review pack for the whole selected set.
